Great letter. A few years ago New Zealand passed the Civil Union Bill, which presented an alternative to marriage with was available to homosexual, and heterosexual, couples. Of course "family groups" and church leaders were outraged, and believed the law would bring about moral decay.
It amused me when opponents claimed that the law would attack the sanctity of marriage. If marriage is a valuable institution that people want to opt for, no civil union is going to stop them. Marriage is capable of eroding itself without the assistance of Civil unions, as divorce rates indicate.
The other argument against the Bill that I found particularly amusing was that the government should not interfere with personal affairs, and should stay out of the bedroom. Surely such laws are attempts to get government, and more importantly the church, out of the bedroom.
As of yet, New Zealand has not been plagued with locusts, ravaged by floods or tornadoes, or swallowed into the depths of hell. So Ireland should be ok too.

Hi Robert: good letter. I'm not in the writing-to-the-Irish-Times mode, but did look up O'Driscoll's dodgy sources. I posted here. Seems he's copied and pasted the misinformation of others.
